Ho Chi Minh City Guide (formerly Saigon)

Ho Chi Minh
Hanoi, the vibrant capital of Vietnam, is a place steeped in history spanning more than a thousand years. The city charmingly blends influences from its Chinese, French, and Russian past, reflected in its colonial architecture, ancient pagodas, and cultural traditions. Particularly impressive is the Old Quarter with its narrow streets, bustling street life, and traditional crafts. But Hanoi also has a quiet side: tranquil lakes, shaded parks, and an unparalleled culinary diversity make the city a place where modernity and tradition go hand in hand.
Must-sees in Ho Chi Minh City and the surrounding area
1. Mekong Delta
An absolute highlight is a tour to the Mekong Delta. Boat trips with an overnight stay are particularly lovely for an immersive experience of the region. We recommend Bassac Cruises https://mekongcruise.com/cruise/bassac-cruise.html
2. Cu Chi Tunnels
The impressive tunnel system from the Vietnam War era is a true "must-see." The best way to get there is by speedboat – at 7 AM to avoid the tourist crowds. Book, for example, with Les Rives Experience.
3. District 2
I lived here myself, and it's my favorite. Over the years, District 2 has come to offer everything that used to be only available in the city center. I recommend starting at the Concept Store In The Mood Saigon and strolling along the streets. Also, visit Wish Vietnam, run by my friend Brad and his charming Japanese wife Koto.
4. Chinatown
Also known as Chợ Lớn, Ho Chi Minh City's Chinatown blends Vietnamese and Chinese cultures. Amidst temples, markets, and tea houses, one can feel the long history of the community. The Bình Tây Market is particularly vibrant with its spices and street food. A stroll here is a journey through colors, aromas, and traditions.
Where should I stay?
1. Park Hyatt Saigon
An absolute classic and, in our opinion, the best choice in District 1. The hotel exudes the charm of old Saigon, offers a prime location, elegant decor, a beautiful pool, a well-equipped gym, and a luxurious spa. It also has one of the best breakfasts in the city.
2. La Casita Saigon
This charming boutique hotel is run by Hoa and her husband. It feels like a "home away from home." The courtyard pool is the perfect place to relax. This used to be a pizzeria – a nostalgic spot for long-time Saigon fans. www.lacasitasaigon.com and email: lacasitasaigon@yahoo.com
3. Mia Saigon
If you prefer something a bit more luxurious and away from the hectic city center, I can recommend the Mia Hotel. Beautifully situated on the Saigon River and equipped with fitness, pool, and spa. https://www.miasaigon.com/
What not to miss?
Vespa Tours
For us, this is the absolute highlight! Riding a Vespa through the streets of Saigon is an unforgettable experience. You get closer to the people and discover places you wouldn't otherwise see. Providers like XO Tours are special because they only have female drivers.

When should I plan my trip?
The best time to travel is from November to April. It's less humid then, and it rains less often. However, climate change is also altering weather patterns here. The best website to find information on the ideal travel time is https://www.selectiveasia.com/weather/january
Our favorite dining spots
1. Quan Bui and Laang: Our absolute favorite for Vietnamese cuisine.
2. Cuc Gach Quan (The Architect’s House): Made famous by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. The food is fantastic!
3. Brix: Trendy spot with top-notch food.
4. Propaganda: Perfectly located near the cathedral.
5. Nha Hang Ngon: Hangout for locals and expats alike. The original idea was to bring street eateries together under one clean roof.
6. Quince and Yunka: Modern restaurants for special occasions.
