Matcha French Toast

Our Favorite Matcha French Toast Recipe

Ingredients

4 slices brioche or white bread
2 eggs
120 ml milk (or plant-based milk)
1 tsp matcha powder (high quality, finely ground)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp sugar or maple syrup
1 pinch salt
Butter or neutral oil for frying

Preparation

In a bowl, thoroughly whisk the eggs, milk, matcha powder, vanilla, sugar, and salt until the matcha powder has fully dissolved and a uniform green mixture is formed. Individually dip the bread slices into the matcha-egg mixture and let them soak briefly, ensuring they absorb the liquid without falling apart. Heat a pan over medium heat and add a knob of butter or oil. Fry the bread slices until golden brown on both sides, crisp on the outside, and soft on the inside.

Finishing Touches

Arrange the Matcha French Toast on a plate. Top with fresh strawberries and serve with a drizzle of maple syrup or a delicate dusting of matcha powder, if desired.

Why French Toast with Matcha?

Matcha is usually known from beverages, as a tea, latte, or iced refreshment.
However, this finely ground green tea powder can do much more than just impress in liquid form. In warm dishes, matcha reveals another side: gentle, aromatic, and balanced. In French Toast, it brings depth and a fine, slightly bitter note that harmonizes perfectly with the subtle sweetness and soft texture. A simple dish that demonstrates how versatile matcha is and how surprisingly good it can taste beyond the cup.
